The one hotel booking no OTA or AI can take a cut of
Marriott's own site needs a promo code and a faked checkout date to sell a day room. Booking.com won't list it and ChatGPT can't book it — which is why the hotel keeps every cent.
Driving the news. Marriott put day-use rooms on sale at five of its London hotels this week — County Hall, Kensington, Maida Vale, Marble Arch, and Regent's Park. Book a room for the afternoon, work or rest, and leave before dinner. No overnight.
The channels that move your rooms don't sell it. Try to book that afternoon on Booking.com. You can't. Booking.com and Expedia list overnight stays and nothing else — which is the whole reason a separate day-use booking layer grew up alongside them. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini to hold you a room for a few hours today and you'll get suggestions, links, a tidy summary. No confirmation number. The assistants plan; they don't close. A same-day daytime slot is the booking they are furthest from ever handling.
The tell is inside Marriott's own site. To pull up the day-use rate on Marriott.com, you type in a promo code: ZDY. Then the calendar fights you. The system won't take a reservation without a checkout date, so you enter tomorrow for a room you're leaving today, then dig through the rate details for the hours that actually apply. The stay earns no Elite Night. Marriott runs one of the most capable booking engines in the business, and it still can't describe a day room without a workaround. The rails were poured for overnight stays. A few hours in the afternoon falls straight through them.
What it means for hotels. Look at what a day-use booking actually is. A room sold for hours it would otherwise sit empty, to a guest who came direct and paid on arrival, at zero commission — because there was no channel in the middle to take one. Booking.com couldn't list it. The agent couldn't close it. The industry is spending millions on the fight over who owns the overnight reservation, who ranks in the AI answer, who finishes the agentic checkout. The daytime hours are already yours, and all of that revenue stays in the building. The one booking nobody can tax is the one nobody else can make.
